Fredericksburg is the beating heart of Texas wine country — second only to a handful of American regions in scale, and rising fast in quality. Dozens of wineries sit within a short drive of downtown, and a tasting day here is the reason a lot of people fall in love with the town. Here's how to do it right.

How Wine Road 290 works

Most of the wineries line U.S. Highway 290 east of Fredericksburg, through Stonewall and Hye toward Johnson City — the stretch known as Wine Road 290. There are also excellent tasting rooms right downtown if you'd rather not drive at all (more on that below). A good Hill Country day is two or three tastings plus a meal — not six wineries. Pace yourself; the wine is strong and the afternoons are long.

Big & social vs. small & intimate

Fredericksburg wineries split roughly into two moods, and knowing which you want makes all the difference:

• Big, scenic & social — sweeping patios, live music, room for a group. Think Grape Creek (a Tuscan-style villa with an on-site restaurant), Becker Vineyards (historic, with lavender fields and a reproduction German stone barn), and Barons Creek (resort-scale with a lively courtyard).
• Small, quiet & winemaker-driven — intimate rooms, serious pours, conversation. Think William Chris Vineyards in Hye (a 100%-Texas-grown benchmark), Pedernales Cellars (Tempranillo and Viognier with a view), and Kuhlman Cellars.

Don't-miss wineries

If it's your first time, a great trio is Becker → Pedernales → William Chris — historic, scenic, and terroir-driven, all a short hop apart on the Stonewall/Hye end. Prefer to stay closer to town with big energy? Grape Creek and Barons Creek are hard to beat.

Reds, whites & the Texas grapes to try

Texas Hill Country shines with warm-climate grapes that thrive in the heat. Ask for:

• Tempranillo — arguably Texas's signature red; structured and food-friendly.
• Rhône styles — GSM blends (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre), Mourvèdre, Syrah.
• Tannat — bold and inky, a Texas standout.
• Viognier and Roussanne — the whites to beat, aromatic and full.

Reservations & the best times to go

Many wineries are closed Monday–Tuesday and increasingly reservation-first, especially on weekends. Weekday visits are quieter and more relaxed; weekend afternoons are the busiest. Always check a winery's site (or ask Fritz) before you drive out.

Taste safely: shuttles & designated drivers

This matters: with two or three tastings on the schedule, line up a wine shuttle, a guided tour, or a designated driver. Fredericksburg has a whole roster of tour operators who handle the driving so nobody has to choose between the wine and the wheel. Never drive yourself between wineries on 290.
